Fenghuang Town, known as Heyang in ancient times, was settled by ancestors as early as Majiabang culture period over 6000 years ago. Brilliant ancient culture of Phoenix was born here. Phoenix, located in the north of State Wu, belonged to Wu County of Kuaiji Prefecture in the Qin Dynasty; belonged to Wu County from the Western Han Dynasty to Tang Dynasty; belonged to Suzhou in the Five Dynasties. During the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, it started to be named Heyang. During the Jiajing Period of Ming Dynasty, Heyang was destroyed by war and relocated to Tianyangzhuang”. Later, the administrative regions were changed several times. Since the 6th year of Datong Period of the Liang Dynasty, it has been belonging to Changshu County. In 1962, it was allocated to Shazhou County(namely Zhangjiagang).
